More Support Against AB 783 with Editorial Letters

April 26, 2011

Assembly Bill 783 would change current California law prohibiting the unsavory practice of self-referral for profit. The bill needs to be defeated for several reasons:

1. It would eliminate patient choice by having physicians control access to physical therapy services other than those owned by medical corporation.

2. Result in a substandard quality of care as numerous independent studies have proved in their investigations of physician-owned physical therapy services.

3. Would lead to higher insurance and workers’ compensation costs for all Californians because of improper diagnosis and unnecessary clinical treatment that studies show are often provided in such illegal business arrangements.

The California Medical Association has come out in support of AB783 for the sole purpose of increasing the financial returns of their members. This bill is just wrong for California and wrong for its citizens.
